Great Looks
If you want that sleek Trick-Truck look, a tonneau is a must. While black is the most common color, some are available in colors to match, or set off, the paint on your truck.

	Soft Tonneaus Soft tonneaus consist of a vinyl fabric attached to an aluminum frame. The frame rails are clamped to the truck bed. Aluminum bows span the bed to support the fabric in the center. The vinyl is attached to the rail in one of three ways- metal snaps, a "peel and seal" plastic tongue and groove method, and "hook and loop" Velcro ® style fasteners. Snaps are typically the least expensive option. They are highly durable, and on some tonneaus can provide access to the front corners of the bed without opening the entire cover. Snaps can be more difficult to operate as the cover expands and contracts with temperature. Peel and seal fasteners are the quickest for opening the entire cover. They can also be difficult to close when the cover shrinks. Hook and loop fastening is the least affected by climate and offers the simplest operation. On all three styles, the vinyl can be rolled up and secured behind the cab. The bows and rear rail are then removed and stowed for full bed access. The hook and loop style is often referred to as a "roll-up", as the rear rail and bows are attached to the vinyl and roll up with it. Hinged soft tonneaus are also available, making access to the bed as quick and easy as the trunk of a car. A more recent development in soft tonneaus is the tri-fold cover. On a tri-fold, the vinyl remains attached to the frame, which is hinged to create three sections. The cover is folded open from the tailgate to the cab for quick and simple operation. The entire cover can be easily removed and stowed.

	Hard Tonneaus Hard tonneaus are typically a one-piece shell of fiberglass, ABS, or aluminum. Folding varieties are also offered in three- or four-section designs. Hard tonneaus offer more security than soft tonneaus, and a sleeker Trick-Truck look. Fiberglass styles are available color matched to your truck.s paint. One-piece designs hinge at the front and feature gas struts to support the cover when open. Hard tonneaus offer quick trunk-like access to the bed. When you need to haul larger items, however, the cover must be removed and stored. ABS covers are lighter and easier to remove than fiberglass.

	Retractable Tonneaus The retractable tonneau is a more versatile version of the hard tonneau. Constructed of interlocking aluminum slats, these covers roll up from the tailgate to the cab, similar to a soft tonneau, yet provide the security of a hard tonneau. Retractable tonneaus are offered in spring assisted or electric versions. Retractable tonneaus are typically the most expensive style.

	Tool Box Tonneaus Many tonneaus of all styles are available in custom sizes to accommodate tool boxes. Some models even have a built-in toolbox that comes with the tonneau! If this type of tool storage is what you need, be sure to look at tool box tonneau versions.

Security
Hard tonneaus and retractable tonneaus offer the greatest security for the contents of your truck bed. Most incorporate a locking mechanism. Some hard tonneaus overlap the tailgate, providing security to a non-locking gate. Of the soft tonneaus, roll-up styles often cannot be opened without first opening the tailgate, offering some level of security.

Bed Access
Just because one particular style of tonneau may be more popular than another, that doesn.t mean it is right for you. Planning how you intend to use the space provided in your bed and realizing the items you need to transport will help you select the most practical tonneau for the way you use your truck.

Quick access to smaller items
When accessing items at the rear of the bed, retractable, hinged or folding tonneaus (hard or soft) offer the easiest access. Retractables, folding, and soft tonneaus generally provide easiest access to the front of the bed. Some snap-on soft tonneaus provide snaps along the front rail for access to the front corners.

Hauling large items
If you often haul oversize items, choose a tonneau that makes it easy to access the entire bed. Hard tonneaus can be cumbersome to remove and store. And what will you do with it if you need to haul something large that you didn.t plan on? Retractable or soft tonneaus may be the better choice for you.

As a general rule, soft tonneaus are the most economical choice; retractables are typically the most expensive; hard tonneaus fall in between the two. There is some overlap in the range of the least expensive retractables and the more expensive hard tonneaus.
